The station wagon was once an icon of suburban life and a consummate example of family-friendly practicality. However, as manufactures continued to emphasize functionality over aesthetics, the general public eventually grew tired of the boring design and shifted focus to the SUV. While most automakers eventually terminated their wagon nameplates, Volvo stayed the course, evolving its wagon lineup to an inspiring level.

Volvo's V60 wagon blends the sophisticated style and sporty performance of a luxury sedan with the spacious utility and comfort of a crossover SUV. It offers a potent engine under the hood, a wealth of premium amenities, and the sophistication and luxury of the automaker's signature Scandinavian design and craftsmanship. In addition to the three primary trim levels, Volvo also offers the V60 in a distinct stand-alone variant, the V60 Cross Country. But what makes these two models different?

The Volvo V60 Cross Country is Ready for Adventure

While both V60 variants can handle rocky or gravely roads, the V60 Cross Country receives specific enhancements that improve is off-road prospects. The V60 Cross Country has 2.5 inches more ground clearance (8.3 total) than the V60, plus softer suspension tuning to better absorb the bumps jostles of off-road travel. Importantly, the V60 Cross Country comes standard with all-wheel-drive for better control and traction on loose or slippery surfaces.

Both V60 variants offer selectable drive modes, but the V60 Cross Country exclusively features an extra Off-Road mode. Designed for low-speed use (below 12 mph), this mode automatically adjusts the throttle, transmission, hill descent control, and traction control.

Which is Better?

The V60 and V60 Cross Country are both outstanding cars with luxurious accommodations, engaging on-road performance, lots of advanced features, and versatile cargo capacities. If you regularly traverse unpaved paths (say, traveling to a mountain lodge or cabin by the lake), the V60 Cross Country is better suited to smoothing experience.
