One of the top questions we get from customers interested in electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) is: how much will it cost to charge at home? Whether you live in Lynnwood, Marysville, Everett, Edmonds, or other parts of the Seattle-Tacoma area, charging costs are an important factor to consider. The good news is that charging your Volvo EV or plug-in hybrid at home is convenient and more affordable than you might think. Let's take a closer look.

Charging Your Volvo at Home

All new Volvo electric cars and PHEVs come with a charging cable that allows you to charge the vehicle from a standard 120V household outlet. This is called Level 1 charging. For faster charging, you can install a 240V Level 2 charging station at your home. Many of our customers opt to install a Level 2 charger for more flexibility and quicker charge times.

How Much Does It Cost to Charge an EV or Plug-in Hybrid at Home?

Your home charging costs will depend on electricity rates in your area and the efficiency and battery size of your particular Volvo model. Here in Washington state, we enjoy some of the lowest electricity prices in the nation. On average, EV owners can expect to pay the equivalent of about $1 per gallon to charge at home, a fraction of what you'd pay for gas. Plug-in hybrids are even more economical, since they have smaller batteries and use electricity for only part of the time.

Let's Test it Out

To give you a real-world example, charging a fully electric Volvo XC40 Recharge at home costs only about $8 for a full charge that delivers an estimated 208 miles of range. For the typical driver, that's less than $40 a month in charging costs. Compared to filling up an SUV with gas these days, the savings can really add up! Charging a Volvo plug-in hybrid like an XC60 T8 costs even less.
